Javier de Frutos - Choreographer
Javier was born in Caracas, Venezuela and began training in Venezuela continuing at the London School of Contemporary Dance and at the Merce Cunningham School in New York.
He formed the The Javier De Frutos Dance Company in 1990 for which he created twenty four pieces including Grass, which was subsequently shown as part of the South Bank Show television portrait of Javier's work in 1997 and which won a South Bank Show Award. Grass was followed by The Hypochondriac Bird (nominated for the 1999 International Institute Award), Mazatlan and Affliction of Loneliness.
Javier has created new works for other dance companies including Milagros for Royal New Zealand Ballet (which will tour to the UK in 2004), Sour Milk for Candoco, All visitors bring happiness, some by coming some by going for Ricochet, The Celebrated Soubrette for Rambert Dance Company, But the Virgin was More Available for The Suzanne Delal Centre, Tel Aviv and Solitary Virgin for the 2002 Festival d’Avignon.
In 2003 Javier he created a work for the Ballet Companhia of Porto in Portugal and expanded But the Virgin to create a dance work based on Tosca (including singers), for the New Israeli Opera in 2004. The Celebrated Soubrette was re-created by the Royal New Zealand Ballet in 2004. Javier has been nominated for a Manchester Evening News Theatre Award in 1994 and 1996.
